Introduction:
My film FABRIC is a short documentary following a team of refugee artisans working to preserve the haute couture fashion industry in Paris. FABRIC was created to bring their work to light while exploring themes of identity, displacement and craftsmanship.
Inspiration:
Inspired by the incredible work of Paris-based non-profit fashion collective Espero and in light of current events in the world, FABRIC humanises the refugee experience and shifts the prevailing narrative. Revealing how the lives of displaced people have been woven together by resilience and a shared humanity, using their skills to build a creative community.
The Process:
Filming took place in Paris over three separate visits with a crew of four. During the interviews with the refugees, there was a careful balance to strike between asking them to recall their difficult journeys and bringing the story back to their creativity. The filming of the fashion show at the Musée d’Orsay was an incredible experience – the grandness and majesty of the space juxtaposed against the hecticness of putting together a fashion show. We had to manage it all on a small Kickstarter fund that we were able to raise in time for the show.
What It Means to Be a Finalist:
Being selected as a finalist at Worcester Film Festival is an incredible honour. The recognition helps bring the stories of the refugees and their incredible work to light. We are delighted to share our small impact documentary with the festival community.
