Introduction:
The Mystery of the Missing Sock is a comedy about a man who loses his favourite sock. On a mission to reunite the pair, he finds something unexpected. Taking the form of a children’s story, it was shot on Super 8 and edited in-camera.
Inspiration:
Why did you make this film? Share what inspired the idea, whether it came from personal experience, a cultural event, or artistic curiosity.
With The Mystery of the Missing Sock, we want to go to the bottom of why sometimes socks go missing and address that universal feeling of frustration. With a modern take on the character of the sock monster, we seek to normalise the representation of queer families in children’s books.
The Process:
Filming took place in February 2025. It was made as part of the Straight 8 competition, which requires the film to be shot on one roll of Super 8 film with no editing and no second takes. Thus, it was shot in narrative order over one day. One of the biggest challenges we faced was getting the timings of each shot right and making sure we had enough film left to capture the whole story. We also had to meticulously plan and rehearse every shot before pulling the trigger.
What It Means to Be a Finalist:
Being selected for Worcester Film Festival is incredible. It’s always amazing to see Super 8 footage shown on the big screen and to get audience reactions to the film.
