Introduction:
When memories, stories and adventures are thought to be lost in our memory, sometimes it can only take the right trigger experience to unlock them in technicolour. My documentary explores just this. Forgotten, faded or distant relationships which began so close to home, but in a different generation and were realistically ‘Beyond Me’ or any of us.
Inspiration:
The inspiration for Beyond Me began with a discovery: a forgotten box of Super 8 film reels tucked away in the attic of my childhood home. Viewing the footage revealed an intimate archive of another family’s treasured adventures from the 1960’s. As I set out on a journey to locate the original family, the project transformed from simple curiosity and an investigative film into a profound emotional mission. I soon learned that the children in the tapes had never seen their late father on moving film, as he passed away during their youth. Rather than framing this story solely around loss, I wanted to craft a documentary centred on the warmth of nostalgia and the joy of reconnection. Beyond Me celebrates the enduring power of archival film to bridge past and present, offering a deeply uplifting exploration of memory, family connection, and living history.
The Process:
Filming for the documentary took place at Toni’s home, one of the children featured across the original reels, in her gorgeous Saltford home. Toni graciously welcomed our crew into her space for an intimate interview, shaped by the deep gratitude she and her siblings felt for the return of their lost family history.
The project’s greatest hurdle was the investigative journey to locate the family. Tracking down the Govan name involved reaching out to numerous individuals, including an actual relative who initially suspected the enquiry was a scam. If she had blocked me, this film may have never even happened. However, overcoming that skepticism made the eventual connection all the more rewarding. The experience offered a profound takeaway for me, the crew, and I think in turn: the audience. It turned into a powerful reminder to cherish everyday moments with loved ones, as they happen.
What It Means to Be a Finalist:
Being selected for the Worcester Film Festival is an incredible milestone for our whole team.
We had our eyes on this prestigious festival from the film’s inception, and being showcased among an exceptional selection of work means the world to us. This recognition provides invaluable momentum for the crew’s emerging industry careers while championing the creative business I began straight out of university. It is a privilege to share our story on this stage.
