Introduction:
The Wedding Veil of the Proud Princess is an animated short in the fantasy / dark fantasy genre. It tells the story of the most beautiful princess in the world, who demands the impossible: to marry a king who conquers all kings. The world is plunged into war as kings from all lands vie for her hand. Based on a story by L.M. Montgomery.
Inspiration- From the director’s statement, by Anna-Ester Volozh:
In “The Wedding Veil of the Proud Princess,” I aimed to subvert traditional fairy tale conventions. Drawing from the ethereal and darkly poetic tone of L.M.Montgomery’s story, I sought to create a cinematic experience that challenges perceptions and invites introspection. Throughout the narrative, there exists a deliberate dissonance between the story as told by the narrator—a cautionary tale of pride and downfall—and the visual representation of the Princess’s perspective. While the world perceives her as haughty and self-absorbed, we glimpse beneath the surface to uncover her longing for freedom and authenticity. Ultimately, this film explores the challenges faced by women who dare to seek autonomy and freedom. In her final act, the Princess transcends the confines of a world that seeks to exploit her, facing the consequences of her own choices with her head held high.
The Process:
As the film’s composer, I had the opportunity to craft a continuous orchestral score that spans continuously from the first to the last frame of the animation. The music is designed to enhance the fantastical and darkly poetic atmosphere of the story. Recorded live with FAME’s 65-piece Macedonian Symphony Orchestra, I also had the pleasure of conducting the ensemble myself.
What It Means to Be a Finalist:
Being selected as a finalist in the Best Composer category at Worcester Film Festival feels wonderful. It’s truly rewarding to have the film’s music recognised for its storytelling and emotional impact.
