Introduction:
My film, Galar, is a short drama rooted in real events in rural Ireland. It follows Michael Gallagher, a father trying to save his crumbling home while also facing an invisible illness. The story is inspired by the defective block crisis in Donegal, where thousands of families discovered their houses were literally falling apart. Though it began as a local story, it’s grown into something that speaks to wider struggles of community and justice.
Inspiration:
The spark for Galar came from witnessing firsthand the devastating impact of the defective block crisis in Donegal. Friends, family, and neighbours were all living with the daily reality of homes collapsing around them. What struck me most wasn’t just the physical decay, but the mental and emotional toll of years spent battling bureaucracy. I wanted to capture that frustration, but also the quiet strength people showed in holding families and communities together. For me, the film is a way of honouring their stories while shining a light on a crisis that remains too often overlooked beyond Donegal.
The Process:
Production was intense but very collaborative. We filmed across Donegal, including in an actual defective block house destined for demolition, with the full support of its former residents. That authenticity grounded everything. The protest sequence was especially powerful; hundreds of locals, many directly affected, came out to take part, waving signs and chanting like they had in real demonstrations. Logistically, it was challenging, but the energy and effort made it unforgettable. Filming in my home community was very affirming, and the people of Donegal really carried this project with us, both in spirit and on screen.
What It Means to Be a Finalist:
Having previously attended Worcester Film Festival, I know firsthand how excellently it is put together by such a passionate and welcoming team. To now return as a finalist feels incredibly special. It’s not only recognition of this story, which began in a small corner of Ireland, but also encouragement to keep creating and sharing voices that matter. I’m thrilled to be back and to watch the festival continue to grow from year to year.
