Introduction

‘Each year in the UK, around 1,000 people die from causes related to epilepsy’ – Young Epilepsy. Nothing’s Impossible is a zero-budget documentary, following the life of epileptic and cancer survivor Ashley Wilson and his family.

Inspiration

Produced by Ashley’s daughter, Abbie May Wilson, the team wanted to continue to tell his story and legacy. The story follows how his partner and three young children dealt with a disabled parent, watching seizures, broken limbs, resuscitations, comas, scans, surgeries… the list goes on. ‘Nothing’s Impossible’ was the name of the challenge Ashley attempted – to row 3600 miles across the Indian Ocean to raise funds and awareness for ‘Young Epilepsy’ a UK-based charity specialising in supporting young people and their families with Epilepsy.
After a near-death event, capsizing within a storm, he was rescued from the ocean, brought back to his family, who were unsure if he had survived. 10 years on, Ashley lives to tell his story – this time with a newly found brain tumour.
Our story has been made to show that nothing is ever truly impossible. The word itself says I’m Possible.

Process

We have worked alongside a Midlands-based crew, supported by staff at BCU, providing equipment, sound engineering by Cottle Sounds and locations including The Square Cow, all donated in kind. We have also been working with Jack Mercer, more commonly referred to as musician VC Pines. His music provides a unique insight into our story, with Jack being epileptic himself. Everything we have done with our documentary has been about amplification of epileptic voices and those who are affected around them.
Just like Ashley did, we are supporting Young Epilepsy with this documentary. You will find a QR code at the end of our film leading to a donation page with all proceeds directly into funding the important work Young Epilepsy do.

What it means to be a finalist

Within the Best Documentary category, there are so many important stories and topics being brought to light; no matter what happens on Awards Night, we truly believe that any story is a more than worthy winner. Our aim is to provide a platform and spread awareness for those affected by Epilepsy, so to be able to fulfil this, thanks to Worcester Film Festiva,l is a complete dream!
A huge thank you to Hendrick, Kirstie, Barbora and Ellie for creating such a wonderful experience for us all.
