Our film, Garbage Boy, is a short and very dark comedy about a young novice starting a new job with a peculiar retrieval company. It was based on a script that I had written years ago, and was my first time moving from producing to writing and directing.
We filmed in the Peak District over 3.5 days towards the end of 2024, with an amazing crew, a wonderful cast, and help from some very friendly locals. I had written the script some eight years earlier, and I finally decided it was time to get it made. Since shooting, the story has been developed into a dark-comedy TV series.
A huge shout-out to everyone on the fantastic crew, who were able to do so much with a minimal budget. The cast brought so much unexpected life to these characters, and it was fantastic to be able to work with my brother on the film. Shout-out to Alex Veitch for bring his experience to set as the DOP, Sarah Palmer for keeping everything calm as the first AD, and producer Rich Heap for bringing it all together. Working with composer Andrew Swarbrick and musician Roo Walker on the score was an incredible experience. We were aiming for a very particular tone, and they blew me away with what they delivered.
As the first time writing and directing, I’ve learned so much from the process of making this film, the management and communication of tone, and the value of opening up to the creativity of the cast and crew.
We’re so excited to be selected at the Worcester Film Festival. It’s an incredible honour, and I’m thrilled to be able to share it with an audience and for Garbage Boy to be seen in a cinema.
