Introduction:
Room Temperature is a short, sharp clay-mationed journey into the subconscious, exploring themes of belonging and rejection through the eyes of a lonely faceless figure. Made with love, care, and fully practical traditional claymation techniques, it’s a deceptively deep narrative disguised by childlike figures, presenting a blank canvas for a global audience to map their own experiences onto.
Inspiration:
The script began life as a whimsical experiment playing around with different personalities attributed to colour. The title came first, with Roni wondering whether different rooms had different temperatures. As things developed between writer/director Roni and See It Off Productions, a more meaningful tale, somewhat reflecting the writer’s own life abroad in London, began to emerge. It’s not a story of colour vs colour, but a global story about what it takes to belong, and whether it’s worth trying to belong in the first place.
The Process:
When Roni initially submitted his 5-page script to See It Off Productions, it seemed as if the film could be achieved in a couple of days. Roni quickly clarified that he did, in fact, envisage it as a claymation, and two years of development commenced. Set building, model making, movement tests, and hunting for the right animating team were all demanding but rewarding experiences. Supplementary funds were raised by over 60 patrons via Kickstarter, and by May of 2024 the team was prepared for principal production. The shoot took 21 days, 9-5, making use of two of Edinburgh’s premier studio spaces, who let us in for virtually nothing for love of the novelty of an independent claymation. We napped on set, explored Leith at lunchtime, and secured the fabled 100 frames per day. A long and detailed post-production process took us up to completion in January 2025, and the film has since been seen at various screenings across the UK and in Japan. Most notable of these, of course, is Worcester Film Festival!
What It Means to Be a Finalist:
Recognition at Worcester is a genuine pleasure. Independent festivals who strive to platform films beyond the obvious choices are a true service to the industry, and are right in line with all of our ambitions here at See It Off Productions. We are grateful that our film can be of credit to the programme, and will be sure to submit all future projects for consideration. Most importantly for us, it gives Roni the BIFA-qualifying recognition he has worked so hard for as a director.
