Introduction:
Birds, boredom and biscuits, Quiet is a comedy that explores loneliness and mental health in an absurdist package.
Inspiration:
The seed of Quiet actually came from a roundtable prompt on a writing course! The fully fleshed-out script followed from my own anxieties and a spiralling over the people who couldn’t leave the house after lockdown, and were left with no support. I’m a big believer in difficult topics delivered through comedy, and a talking bird seemed an excellent vehicle to drive through this wall of madness.
The Process:
We filmed at Spaghetti Studios in Birmingham in one very long day. We had a tight budget, a tiny timeframe and were even more challenged when our initial location pulled out a week before the shoot. We got incredibly lucky with Matt and the team at Spaghetti, who couldn’t have done more for us. This being my first full crew and set as a director was really exciting, and I grew immensely from the experience. Everyone smashed it!
What It Means to Be a Finalist:
It’s coming home! I’m a Worcester sauce, born and bred, and to have my short shown in my home town means more than I can say. My parents will be coming to see it; they have promised not to embarrass me. Thoughts & prayers.
