Introduction:

Our film, A Glass House, is a short drama that follows a multi-cultural family as they confront loss and navigate their grief. The film explores the profound impact of overcoming personal challenges through connection and empathy. It’s a story about finding strength in vulnerability and the power of shared human experience.

Inspiration:

The film was written and directed by Charles Strider, who originally conceived the idea during a challenging period of homelessness. Charles’ work often centres on overcoming struggles rather than the struggle itself, with a core theme of connection. A large part of the film’s identity also came from producer Red Wade’s family history. The narrative is infused with inspiration from Red’s mixed heritage, exploring how individuals from different cultures struggle with the British societal structure’s inability to openly process grief. We believe in the power of cinema to heal and inspire, with this film reflecting a personal journey towards a more inclusive and empathetic world.

The Process:

Filming took place over the summer of 2022, with a crew of 15 talented Midlands natives, in a private garden hidden away in the heart of Birmingham’s busy city. The film was privately funded through a series of open garden events held at the location, with proceeds supporting both the garden’s upkeep and the film’s production. We were honoured to have the incredible Gary Beadle in the role of Marcus and the amazing Lucy Wells in her on-screen debut. Post-production was a two-year process, with the majority of the work completed at the prestigious National Film and Television School. The film premiered in October 2024 at the BAFTA and BIFA qualifying Bolton Film Festival, and we’re overjoyed with its journey, especially since we’re screening at a festival so close to our hearts.

What It Means to Be a Finalist:

Every crew member is thrilled about the film’s selection and its two nominations. Our director, Charles Strider, is especially pleased, as a Worcestershire native himself. He said, “I am so proud not only for our work taking part in such a wonderful festival, but it also brings me so much immense joy to see the steps Worcester Film Festival has taken year after year in developing, building a powerful community, and showcasing local talent”.
