Introduction:
When Kurt sat down for a piano session four years ago, a new melody started to unfold on his keyboards. The tune had the feel of a bygone era, a time of glamour and innocence. The melody felt like it was leisurely, yet purposefully, moving towards some destination. That’s when
Kurt remembered walking down the length of Brighton Pier, breathing in its salty air, looking out over the turquoise sea, and watching happy children wolf down candy floss, as their parents soaked in the atmosphere. Like a thunderbolt out of the blue, Kurt said aloud that he was going to name his new song a short film, Strolling Down Brighton Pier.
Inspiration/The Process:
With melody in hand, Kurt tackled the lyrics. He began to picture a gorgeous lady promenading down the pier at the same time every day. A successful young man sees her and is instantly captivated by her beauty. He longs to talk to her, but he is unable to muster the courage to approach her. When he finally does, he is devastated to learn that there’s someone else in the picture.
As he fleshed out the song, Kurt felt that the story and music had the potential to be made into a short music film. So, he commissioned the incomparable Tim Gorman to orchestrate the piece.
Then Kurt arranged for Britain’s national orchestra, the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, to record the music. After that, Kurt collaborated with Brighton’s own Locate Productions, LTD to make the film. Shot mostly on location on Britain’s most beloved pier, Strolling Down Brighton Pier captures the elegance of a time long gone by and the perils of falling madly in love!
What It Means to Be a Finalist:
Everyone on the Strolling Down Brighton Pier team is honoured and humbled to be a finalist and participate in this year’s Worcester Film Festival. We hope that those who see the film are inspired and transported to a time and place it seeks to encapsulate.
