Introduction:
Pea Sized Drop is a short film that explores the distress of living with a body that becomes a source of anxiety and judgment, in this case, facial acne. As brothers, we created this film to connect emotionally with audiences by presenting a character most of us could identify with in our own way.
Inspiration:
Having lived in Korea for the last couple of years, a country in which facial care is of utmost importance. I began to observe how some people, including me, dealt with the quiet humiliation of dealing with an uncontrollable condition. After I desperately spent hundreds of dollars on dermatology appointments and cleansers, it drove me to put these feelings into words.
This would be my first time directing and my brother’s first time acting. We spent around a month working together to do the best work possible.
The Process:
After we decided on what exactly we wanted to explore in this film, we analysed thoroughly all the potential filmmaking tools we had at our disposal. This included close friends and family who were also filmmakers or open to it, the location (restaurant owned by a friend’s father), and the equipment (owned by a close friend).
By using our close circle, we were able to simplify the logistical process and free up most of our budget for purely creative choices like makeup, costumes, art and post-production. This gave us much freedom when writing the script and on the actual shooting date.
We shot the film over one day at the restaurant and at our own home. The most difficult part of the shoot was applying the make-up. It took an hour for our mom and sister to make the acne look as realistic as possible, and it had to be done twice.
What it means to be a finalist:
Being selected at a great festival like Worcester means the world to us. Having our work be recognised and given the chance to be showcased to other fellow filmmakers is any filmmaker’s dream. And when it is accomplished with a film brought to life by close friends and family, it is even more special.
