Introduction:
In our film, we follow the last remaining ‘Mimic’ in England as her world is rocked by a new patient, and the cracks in her reality begin to widen. This Soft Sci-Fi Drama is an uncomfortable exploration of loneliness, grief and romance.
Inspiration:
The inspiration for this film came from our writer/lead actress’s own personal life and her Dad’s illness. After her dad lost the use of his voice, Jessica became interested in the human voice and what that evokes in all of us. If you look closely, you can spot Jessica’s dad in the film. From this starting point, the story of Mimic began to evolve, and we ended up taking it down a much darker path than we originally thought.
The Process:
Our filming took place in an old house on the Suffolk Coast. The location was absolutely ideal for the aesthetic of the film, lost in a time that could be the real world, but wasn’t quite in tune with the world around it. One of the challenges but also joys of the process was building the world of the film inside the house. How do you create a home that is completely analogue and not set in any particular time period? It was tough, but our brilliant production designer Matthew D Bayfield and I managed to find some fantastic pieces that really grounded the world we wanted to create in an accessible reality for the audience. One of the greatest joys of this production was seeing the crew on our lunch breaks all taking a dip in the sea, perfect.
What It Means to Be a Finalist:
Being selected for such a wonderful festival is such a privilege. We went into this with no support from production companies or big financial grants, and to have created something of this standard that people seem to want to see more of is really gratifying and exciting.
