Introduction:
Benevolence is a dramatic and emotional short film which tells the story of a mother and her unwell child. Its captivating story and naturalistic style, will not fail to connect with audiences. Benevolence was created with the intention of giving a heartfelt portrayal of motherhood, resonating deeply with mothers around the world.
Inspiration:
The idea for Benevolence formed when I realised that motherhood and a mother’s unconditional love, is very overlooked and not talked about enough. Due to this I wanted to create an emotionally impactful piece that would not only shine a light on a mother’s love but
also help people appreciate it more. My inspiration for the mothers’ character in Benevolence came from my own mother and the memories I have of her, incorporating aspects of her personality and characteristics allowing me to create a character that felt authentic, relatable and natural.
The Process:
Benevolence was filmed in my grandmother’s house because of the unique atmosphere it had. The rich colours of greens, reds, browns and creams throughout the home created a warm environment. To enhance these tones, we used warm lighting to create that sunset warm and cozy look. I wanted the home interior to feel inviting because I felt it would contrast well with the outside scenes as they were intended to be cold and stagnant. The pre-production for Benevolence took a whole year, with myself and my producer working together to fill out paper work, dates, timings, logistics and over all planning so that we were completely prepared for the shoot, making sure we had everything in place so that it would run smoothly. At the very start of the pre-production phase I was told that due to Benevolence being my first film it would be too hard to have a child on set, but I never had disbelief, so with a lot of time, effort and dedication, we managed to achieve this, creating my first outstanding film, teaching me that just because things are hard does not mean they are impossible.
What It Means to Be a Finalist:
Being selected as a finalist at Worcester film-festival is a huge honour. I couldn’t be prouder of myself and my amazing crew that all worked so hard to get here. I am so thankful that my first ever film can now be shown on the big screen in front of a huge audience and being able to share that experience with my friends and family is even greater.
